Nowadays it is very common to see AI used by both candidates in writing their CVs, and by companies in their hiring process. It can be a useful tool to use to your advantage, however it can also make things worse if you are not careful.
Assistance Writing CVs
AI can be used to write the actual content of your CV, like any written document. However, this is not something that is advisable as you want your CV to be an authentic and genuine representation of you and your unique skills and talents. Writing the first draft with AI is likely to result in something that sounds very similar to other people, as it has after all been trained on other peoples content. It may sound unique to you, but you should remember the person reviewing your CV will likely be reviewing 10s of candidates for the role and so something that sounds similar to everyone else is not going to make you stand out.
The other thing to remember is that, assuming you are successful, you are going to have to interview virtually and perhaps face to face. If there is a big difference between how you come across in writing on your CV and how you speak in person, it will look suspicious. If you are not a native English speaker, or even if you are, write in the language you would use on a daily basis, don’t include words you would never normally say because you think they make you look better.
Assistance Editing and Refining CVs
AI can be very useful in the refining and editing stage of your CV. You can use it to check for spelling and grammar, although be sure that you are checking in the localised language. If you are applying to a British company you don’t want it to change your CV to American English spelling. You can also ask it to check whether you are using outcome and achievement based language, and ask for suggestions on how to express yourself better. However, be cautious about lifting any phrases verbatim into your CV for the reasons outlined above. You can also feed it the job description you are applying for, and ask it to evaluate how well your CV matches the job description.
How Employers Use AI
Different employers vary, however some of the following are common scenarios where AI might be used
- Writing the job description, and yes companies can fall into some of the pitfalls that we advise you to avoid themselves
- Matching CVs to job description, as we recommend you do above
- Analysing your LinkedIn to give a wider profile on you than just your CV
- Analysing the code on your GitHub
